If your small business blog is bland, if your readers are turning away in distaste, you may need to change your small business blogging recipe. A great small business blog has four key ingredients:
Website or blog "stickiness" is the ability to draw readers back to visit regularly. It's the single biggest challenge of most bloggers. Personal interaction, conversation and friendliness help a lot. Having a well organised and easy to navigate blog helps a lot too. Information series (weekly updates for example), webinars, quality articles, infographic designs and humorous writing all help with stickiness.
Being terrified of offending people is the quickest way to bore them. Most people welcome a little debate over a hot topic and will overlook a little cheekiness and personality in your small business blog content – especially if it makes it more entertaining. You can encourage controversy without being outright offensive and you can always pose the hard questions and host the debate while your readers do the arguing for you.
Including new, insightful, useful, free information in every blog makes your site a valuable, meaty resource for your readers. Don't waste their time with the bleeding obvious and don't write just for keyword's sake. Be sure to answer their questions thoroughly and with insight.
No branding, no core values, no website marketing messages or fancy wordsmithing, show your readers who you are and how your business runs. It's not about sharing the details of your baby's nappies or airing dirty laundry, it's about inviting your readers in to your brand - so make it an enjoyable experience! If Jade on reception had a baby, tell the readers about it. If a water main burst and everything hit the fan, let readers have a laugh at your expense. Like to fish? Let's see photos of the ones that didn't get away. Christmas party shots, behind the scenes, photos, personal opinions and stories all humanise your blog. It's much easier to relate to a human than it is to meaty content so mix it up!
Your small business blog is a valuable tool - for sales, for branding and for SEO (what is SEO?). You may need to change the recipe a little to create your masterpiece, but jeez, how sweet it is to have those extra buyers stopping in!
