Facebook Timeline Checklist - Tech Specs and How To!

Here's a list of stuff you'll need to make the change to the new Facebook timeline for pages and it's changed AGAIN!

Facebook Timeline Cover Photo Specs

The size of your Facebook Timeline cover photo is 850×315 (850px wide and 315px height).  If you're not a Photoshopper, you can invest in a web designer, graphic designer or Facebook designer to do it for you (check out our online advertising agency for options) or alternatively, download Gimp and try your hand at design (so worth learning the basics!)  You can simply crop an existing photo to that size (remember to pick something that can be blocked by your avatar in the bottom left corner) or create something from scratch.

You are NOT allowed to include web addresses or promotional calls to action on your cover photo.

If you're super clever and creative and visually gifted (so I missed out on this one) create a clever cover that appears to "interact" with your avatar (profile picture).  Your profile picture will sit at 23 pixels inside the cover (bottom left) and 60 pixels deep.

Best practice for your cover photo is:

  • High quality photos that are decent technical quality too

  • Minimise the use of reds as they distort

  • Pick something unique that stands out

  • Use an image that sums up your brand

  • Choose an image that looks great in that shape

  • Choose an image where the "important stuff" is to the right

  • Fill the whole box with image, avoid too much white space

  • Avoid offensive images

  • If you don't own the copyright to the image, you ARE breaking the law.

Facebook Profile Picture Specs

Your Facebook Timeline profile picture is 125 pixels x 125 pixels with a 6 pixel white border.  Despite this, you'll need to upload a picture that is a minimum of 180 pixels by 180 pixels.  Because your web details can't be displayed on the cover, your profile picture can be used for that, but remember, it's going to show up everywhere you post, so pick something that is well branded too.

 NOTE:

MESSAGE FROM FACEBOOK

On April 26, we will be updating the size of the profile picture on all Pages. We are letting you know about this small change in advance so that you can update your profile picture on April 26. The new profile picture will be 160 x 160 pixels and will sit at 23 pixels from the left and 210 pixels from the top of the Page.

Individual Tab Pictures

Your tabs are now going to display differently.  You can choose which ones are immediately visible by changing their positions.

You will then need to create branded pictures for each tab.  Consider the name you've given the tabs and compliment that with the image.  A great example of this is Brisbane Web Design business LBM Designs Facebook page.  Check out how the tab design and name complements the tab name nicely – to change your tab name, see below.

Tip: If you don't have a QR code yet (an image scannable by smart phones that directs people straight to your website), consider getting one for use as your contact us tab image.  QR codes are free to create, simply google QR code generator.

Tab images should be uploaded with a minimum height of 100 pixels and are twice as wide as they are high.  To change a tab image go "manage"(in your new admin panel), click "apps" and select the tab you wish to change.  Click change image and upload the new tab image.  You can also choose a custom tab name there.

TIP:  If you're still using older style tabs  (Static FBML for example) you won't be able to select your profile tab pictures, in fact, you'll end up with random ones!  It's time to update.  See our dodgy pictures for an example (it's on our designer's list!)

Pinnable Content

Prepare a status update to pin to the top of your new timeline.  This will be the first thing new likers see so make it valuable and relevant to what you're all about.  A call to action on one of your products, a big bright image and lots of branded information is best practice.  This image needs to be changed every week, so keep pinning your best!  To pin, click the little pencil icon in the top right hand corner of your status update and select "pin to top".  You can also reposition photos in that area.

About Blurb

Your "about" blurb shows on the top of your page next to your tabs.  It's the first place new likers will look so make it good.  Try to include keywords for SEO purposes and if you're a place page, be sure to fill in your categories to have those displayed too.  Add your website to your about tab!~

New Facebook Page Name!

If you're like us, you HATE your Facebook name!  You can now change it!  WOOT WOOT!  Change your name by making a request via this Facebook Page.  Unfortunately, they seem inundated with requests so it may take some time!

Your name is your single most important SEO tool on your page so choose a name that is searchable and keyword rich.  For example – instead of say, Talk About Creative – Words That Work (which sucks, we know) try SEO Copywriting | Content Marketing | Talk About Creative.

Branded Images

It's not compulsory but you should consider getting together a bunch of images for your page. Now that it's laid out to show features, a bright, colourful, visually interesting page will have more appeal.  If you create images yourself, be sure to watermark them with your brand name so if they do get stolen, at least your brand name travels with them.

2 Hours to learn the new Timeline Layout

It's a bit intimidating at first and there are lots of new features and old ones to relearn.  It's a tad confusing to start so spend some time and really get to know it, this will minimise the disruption to your page.

That's enough to get you started on the epic migration to Facebook Timeline for business pages J  It's going to take a little time to get used to, and there are still PLENTY of bugs, but it's like a bandaid, do it fast, all at once and it won't be nearly as painful!  Remember, if it all gets too hard, we offer social media marketing packages!
