Small business SEO is very different to larger brands – so it's important to know, and own, your niche. A big brand like Coke may be going after the keyword "soda" worldwide. For their brand name, they'll want to have control of the first five or six pages of Google so that negative publicity is hard to find. They'll rank for smaller keywords like "soft drink manufacturers" automatically because their brand attracts so much attention (and so many links).
The difference is, they do millions (billions?) of transactions per year, your small business does not.
Hang out where your clients hang out, check out industry forums and websites and look for the phrases that they use to describe your product. Use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to research what they're Googling and then go afters small, niche keywords. The bigger ones should be assigned to your static (website) pages and the small, long tail ones are great for your blog. Blog SEO is about covering all your bases.
